ERASERHEAD (1977), HAXAN (1923, DENMARK)

Happy Halloween!

It would appear that I've just about exhausted the Horror film index of the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. But here are a couple of 1001 films technically listed as horror that I haven't done a blog on before.

Happy Halloween film #1

Eraserhead

One night during the 80's, I suggested to a couple of buddies we get a couple of "trippy" movies. One was Cocaine Fiends, a Reefer Madnesslike 30's propoganda film where the heroine is given "headache powder," that she becomes addicted to and then the revelation of the film comes in the line "You dumb, broad. That's not headache powder! That's COCAINE."

Cocaine Fiends was good for some campy laughs, but then we watched in Eraserhead. This put a damper on our jovial mood. What the hell was this about? I was given several looks of confusion from my friends during our viewing, as I was the one who chose this oddity afterall. But we watched it to completion.

Trying to read the plot straight: A young man named Henry Spencer appears to be hatched from outer space and sent to earth by a creator figure. He wears a suit, has a "tall" hair style and lives modestly within an industrial complex. His profession is as a printer in a factory. He briefly meets the sexy neighbor who lives across the hall.

He meets up with his girlfriend, Mary and they have dinner with her parents. The girlfriend's mom serves them a type of chicken dish that bleeds and moves. We find out that the girlfriend is pregnant and the scene ends.

We are now in Henry and Mary's apartment and they have since gotten married and have a loud baby that resembles an alien. Mary can't stand the sounds that the alien baby makes and moves out.

The baby gets sick and Henry tries to take care of it.

We then cut to a new character, a blonde with puffy cheeks, who performs a song about heaven on a stage.

The attractive neighbor comes over and sleeps with Henry.

Henry then appears on the stage with the blonde before his head pops off and shows that he is also an alien!

A kid takes Henry's head to a factory where they make erasers out of it.

But apparently it is all a dream, as Henry is back in his original form and we see Henry cut open the bandages that surround his baby and the insides of the baby spill out in a white foam!

Erasehead ends with a shot of the creator figure before the blonde with the puffy cheeks and Henry embrace.&nbsp

I may have the order of a couple of scenes off, though recounting the plot of Eraserhead is pretty pointless. Director David Lynch has said that no interpretation he has ever heard of this film has matched his.

Anyway, after me and my friends finished the film, they asked me what the hell that was all about. I said I didn't know and that was the end of it.

Happy Halloween! film #2

Häxan: Witchcraft Through the Ages

Truly a hard film to put a label on. This Danish silent gives a narrated trip on witchcraft through the middle ages. But don't worry, Satan fans. There's plenty of him there too!

You can experience this either through subtitles or through the narrative talents of Naked Lunch author William S. Burroughs if you watch the updated version from the 60's.

Some of the artwork they show depicting Satan and his minions is admittedly stunning while Burrough's gives us a brief history lesson of withcraft, sorcery and demons in Europe's middle ages.

But that's just the first part!

Then we have a series of dramatic scenes featuring Satan, worshippers of Satan and those being preyed upon by Satan.

And if that weren't enough, we come to another series of scenes depicting those accussed of withcraft (featuring a 78-year-old flower seller named Marda Pederson) and her single minded accusers.

Finally, we come to the modern part of the film (Modern being 1920) where the church has now been replaced by psychiatry and demonic possession is replaced by neuroses of various kinds.

Häxan probably seemed so groundbreaking and ahead of its time (it has a rich history of being banned) but at the same time it seems like a bit of an enigma. How do you categorize it? What is the point here? And why did I watch this right after Eraserhead?

Oh, well. Happy Halloween.

MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON (1943)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 7

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us conclude the films for this week with...

Meshes of the Afternoon

1. What happens?
A flower is placed on a sidewalk and picked up by a young woman. She walks up the steps to her house and goes in after struggling with the key. The house has newspapers on the floor and a loaf of bread on the table with a knife in it. The telephone leading up the stairs is off the hook. She goes up the stairs of her room and sees a phonograph playing. She sits in a chair by the window and falls asleep.

A faceless and shroudded figure walks on the pathway outside the house and the woman attempts to follow her. The woman can't catch the figure and goes back into the house and finds the knife from the bread on the steps leading upstairs. She races up the stairs to find the knife now on her bed and the telephone in her bed and off the hook.

She becomes disoriented before taking the needle off the phongraph. She sees an image of herself sitting in the chair facing the window where she fell asleep! She goes to the window and once again sees the shrouded figure outside and she sees the image of herself once again chasing the shrouded figure.

The shrouded figure goes into the house and one of the representations of the woman follows her. The figure places the flower on the woman's bed as the woman watches.

We witness the cycle of a version of the young woman following the shrouded figure again as the version of the woman inside the house takes the key to the house out of her mouth before it turns into a knife.

The three versions of the woman are now at a table inside the house where the knife turns back into a key.

One of the versions of the woman goes up to another version of the woman in the chair and appears about to stab her. As the woman in the chair reacts, the stabbing version of the woman turns into a man. The man turns away from her and proceeds upstairs and puts a flower on the bed as the woman follows.

They sit on the bed together before the woman grabs the knife and appears to shatter the image of him with the knife handle.

An ocean view is now followed by the same man walking down the path before going into the woman's house. After he enters the house, he sees the woman dead in her chair.

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen...we have now achieved total heaviosity!

3. What was your favorite part?
Not really one particular part. More of how the entire film fits together.

4. What was your least favorite part?
The fact that the face of the shrouded figure looks a bit like an iron was a little distracting.

5. Did you get it?
I think so. And I've got to declare Meshes of the Afternoon as my favorite of the seven films from Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week!

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
I believe with the right medication, you might be tempted to watch this a dozen times or so.

7. What about the sex?
The man and woman sit in the bed together, but anything beyond that is left to the imagination.

8. What about the violence?
The image of the woman at the end was more disturbing because we did not see the violence.

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film that..."
"This is the film that was so hard to describe I typed a 410 word summary for a film that only lasted only 14 minutes."

10. Would you watch it again?
Yes, I would like that.

SALO: OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (1975)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 5

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us continue with a most unpleasant viewing experience...

Salo: or the 120 Days of Sodom

1. What happens?
We witness a series of acts of total depravity perpetrated by libertine fascists during the waning days of World War II.

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
I suppose you could make a case for this movie saying something about how absolute power corrupts absolutely, but I was too busy being repulsed by the whole thing to notice.

3. What was your favorite part?
The opening credits and theme written presumably by the maestro, Ennio Morricone

4. What was your least favorite part?
Everything that occured after the opening credits and theme written presumably by the maestro, Ennio Morricone

5. Did you get it?
No. And if I did, I wouldn't admit it.

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
No...No...and no.

7. What about the sex?
There's plenty, just nothing remotely enjoyable to see.

8. What about the violence?
More than I care to remember.

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film...
This is the film that no matter how one may feel about it, you should really be sickened by it.

10. Would you watch it again?
Only if I'm tied to a chair and my eyes are pried open like Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

HEAVEN AND EARTH MAGIC (1962)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 5

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us continue with...

Heaven and Earth Magic

1. What happens?
A series of cut-out animation images come and go throughout the length of the film. Some of the images seem related. Some seem arbitrary.

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
I will yield the answer to this to question number 6.

3. What was your favorite part?
I thought the cut-out animation presented during the beginning was a clever way to open a film.

4. What was your least favorite part?
When I realized that the cut-animation that opened the film was actually going to go on for the entire film.

5. Did you get it?
Once again, I will yield to question number 6.

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
Let me put it this way. During my 66 minute viewing, I was often bored or distracted. However, with the right type of medicinal enhancement, this film might look like freakin' Citizen Kane to me! Oh, Heaven and Earth Magic! Why couldn't I have seen you in 1988?

7. What about the sex?
Not much definable in the way of sex.

8. What about the violence?
Not much definable in the way of violence.
No sex? No violence? Why, it's an avant-garde film for the entire family!

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film..."
"This is the film that you really shouldn't see straight."

10. Would you watch it again?
As soon as they perfect a Wayback Machine and I can get back to 1988.

HOLD ME WHILE I'M NAKED (1966)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 4

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us continue with...

Hold Me While I'm Naked

1. What happens?
A filmmaker is making a movie and seems quite content with his finished product. However, some of his cast memembers are not so happy. One of his actresses thinks that he is filming her without clothes too much and quits. The filmmaker goes home and takes a shower before his mother makes him lunch.

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
There was some heaviness to it, though I didn't have much trouble lifting it.

3. What was your favorite part?
(Tie) Naked blonde in the shower
or
Filmmaker's mother cooks him lunch

4. What was your least favorite part?
Felt sorry that a bird died.

5. Did you get it?
I think so.

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
Possibly, though the jury is still out on that one.

7. What about the sex?
Shots of boobs in the shower (not in the shower of the filmmaker) and behind stained glass.

8. What about the violence?
Nothing other than the bird dying.

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film..."
"This is the film where a visionary tries to make a profound artistic statement, yet the essence of his dreams remain ultimately unfulfilled"
or
"This is the film where there are several good boob shots in the shower!"
(Choice of description dependent on who I'm talking too)

10. Would you watch it again?
I watched it again already. And you may think it was just because of the boob shots in the shower, but I was really just trying to get more meaning out of it...I'm serious!

WAVELENGTH (1967)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 3

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us continue with...

Wavelength

1. What happens?
We see a room. It appears to be a business of some kind which overlooks a fairly busy city street. There is a chair, a desk, a phone and a few pictures in the room. A couple of girls wander in and listen to "Strawberry Fields Forever." The room changes intermittently between light and shadow, between silence and a loud buzzing. There appears to be a man die at some point and a woman comes in a few minutes later and calls the authorities. We conclude by coming to a close-up picture of the ocean which the viewer appears to be taken into it.

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
Few are heavier.

3. What was your favorite part?
The woman that called the police did break up the monotony of staring at the wall for the last ten minutes, though I also liked the "Strawberry Fields Forever" interlude.

4. What was your least favorite part?
I could only take so much of that buzzing sound.

5. Did you get it?
Sometimes yes, sometimes not so much.

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
Without question

7. What about the sex?
The woman that called the police, I imagine being sexy in a goth kind of way. Didn't really get a good look at her though.

8. What about the violence?
A guy appears to be killed. How and why is up to your imagination. I admit I kind of like that.

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film..."
This is the film where nothing much happens for long periods of time, though if you were to argue that by nothing happening, many things happen really are happening, I would't try to argue with you.

10. Would you watch it again?
I might. Maybe after a fast so my head will be clear of my preconceived bourgeois ideas of what a proper narrative should be.

SCORPIO RISING (1964)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 2

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us continue with...

Scorpio Rising

1. What happens?
Well, there's this guy working on his motorbike. He seems to like James Dean, Marlon Bradon, skulls, tatoos, cigarettes and...leather...and chains. We see his friends, who also like leather quite a bit... Well, that was an interesting shot they just showed! Then the friends take the motorbikes to a party. Doesn't seem to be many women at the party, but all appear to be having a good time!... Oh, dear...why did they do that? And we see a motorcycle race, interspresed with a film about, uh...Jesus. I mean that literally. Interspersed with a film about Jesus!

Oh, my. Then there's a Nazi chess board..and uh, did I mention that there were 50's and 60's tunes like "Devil in Disguise," "My Boyfriend's Back," "Heatwave," and "Wipeout," playing throughout?

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
It was heavy, though did not achieve total heaviosity.

3. What was your favorite part?
As I mentioned, the musical choices were very good.

4. What was your least favorite part?
I guess I would say all the shirtless leather boys, but I'm just so damn open minded I only had to use the skip ahead on this video three times!

5. Did you get it?
I think so. Wait, I'm not supposed to get it. I'm changing my response to no. Final answer.

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
No, not this time.

7. What about the sex?
There was plenty of underlying sex here. It's just not sex for my team. But you know, everything can't be Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS!

8. What about the violence?
There are a few things happening which you might want to label as violence, but the victims don't seem to be very unhappy about it.

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film..."
"This is the film where these guys like leather and chains and they are into motorcycles and"...on second thought, I probably wouldn't describe this movie.

10. Would you watch it again?
Probably not. But it did make we want to listen to some more Fifties and Sixties tunes!

AN ANDALUSIAN DOG (1928, FRANCE)

Experimental/Avant Garde Cinema Week Day 1

There are several experimental or avant garde films on the 1001 movie list. In trying to figure out how to deal with them, I decided that the best way for me to handle these often tough nuts to crack is just watch them and try to answer ten basic questions about them on my personally devised standardized test. So let us now begin with...

An Andalusian Dog

1. What happens?
This guy sharpens a straight razor and slices into the eyeball of this woman. Then we see another guy in female attire riding a bicycle who falls down on a curb. Then we see yet another guy with ants crawling on his hand. And this other guy (or is it a different guy?) gropes a woman's breast and buttocks. Then he begins pulling a piano with a deer and a couple of clerics on it. A lady gets run over by a car. And then we see the two main characters buried in the sand. I may have missed a few details here and there.

2. Was it heavy? Did it achieve total heaviosity?
Yes, it was very heavy and coming to a Film Studies 101 class near you.

3. What was your favorite part?
I suppose the dragging the piano weighed down by clerics scene if I had to choose one.

4. What was your least favorite part?
I suppose the dragging the piano weighed down by a dead deer scene if I had to choose one.

5. Did you get it?
Yes, I got it. Well, maybe not. Can I get back to you on that one?

6. Might the viewing experience have been enhanced from either prescription or non-prescription medication of some kind?
Absolutely

7. What about the sex?
I repeat there was a scene where we see excessive groping of breasts and buttocks.

8. What about the violence?
Eyeball slicing. Hit by car. Oh, and I forgot to mention a guy gets shot dozens of times. I'm not sure if he dies or not or just turns into a deer weighing down a piano that someone is trying to drag.

9. Describe this film in one sentence starting with "This is the film..."
"This is the film where they slice the eyeball and then the director successfully makes a film that intentionally makes no sense at all."

10. Would you watch it again?
I'm sure I will if I ever decide to take another Film Studies class.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE (1981, GREAT BRITAIN)

* This post really has nothing to do with Chariots of Fire, I just needed a blog heading.

The 2013 edition of the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book is finally out and this time lists a whopping 50 (give or take a couple) titles! Like it's not taking long enough for me to finish as is! Anyway, I thought it was a good time to check on my progress.

The new list of 50 includes:

I've counted the films I've seen since this blog began and numbered them on this list. At 535 films seen, I'm still not even half way to the end (which is now 1152!), but 46% of the movies down...that's further than I thought I would get. Argo

Well, it's time for another editon of the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book (5th revised). Past editions have replaced a few movies (about 10-12) with very recent ones. The movies that have changed in updated editions have almost all been within the past ten years or so.

Django Unchained

You may say this is because there is a core list of movie classics that shouldn't be changed or you may say the editors and publishers don't want to take older movies out since all the films are listed in chronological order and you would have to reshuffle the entire book to include older listings.

Lincoln

Regardless, this new edition has promised 50! new films. Before knowing what is on the list, I made sure that I went through all the Oscar nominated films from the previous year. I knew the Life of Pi (a fantastical and entertaining journey and my choice for Best Picture) was on the front cover and Lincoln (a film dominated by Daniel Day Lewis's Lincoln portrayal which was as stunning as its reputation) was on the back cover.

There were also blurbs on the dust jacket for Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino's over-the-top Western), Argo (an entertaining political film, but Best Picture of the year?) and the depressing, but moving Foreign film winner Amour, a film about an elderly woman who has a stroke and has to be cared for by her husband.

Amour

The 5th revised edition is now out and the winners (or those included in the book) from this list are:
Amour
Argo
Django Unchained
Les Miserables
The Life of Pi
Lincoln

The Life of Pi

I was also glad to see that Les Miserables made the list. I like the movie adaptation, but if you like musicals at all, try to catch this perfomed live if you can. I will also gladly perform "Do You Hear the People Sing" to any that would like me to sing it. (As of this writing, I haven't gotten any takers.)

Les Miserables

And the didn't quite make the book list from Oscar nominated films is:
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Searching for Sugar Man
Silver Linings Playbook
Zero Dark Thirty

Zero Dark Thirty

Beasts of the Southern Wild was tough little indie film which might not quite make my list either. However, I am glad it received praise and found an audience.

Silver Linings Playbook struck me as a well-written date movie. It wouldn't quite make my list, though it isn't without its charm.

Zero Dark Thirty was a hard hitting dramatization of the hunt for Osama Bin-Laden. It would probably have made my list, but the book doesn't seem to agree.

Seaching for Sugarman was the one I was really surprised wasn't on the list. The book usually adds a documentary or two with each new addition and I thought this Oscar winning crowd pleaser about the search for a mysterious folk singer would be included. Well, it's definitely on my list.

Searching for Sugar Man

Looks like that's six titles knocked off from the new book. Only 44 to go with the new entries. "Only" about 500 movies to go total...more coffee, please!
